Question on the alarm system

I am a newbie!

How do I turn the alarm system on? Is there a special code, switch, button that I should be aware of?

Howdy! A few more details would be helpful, is it a factory alarm? In what car, (can I assume a 7 series)? Whay year?

for my 91 750, locking the door with the key sets the alarm.... the little red light in the top center air vent on the dash will varify that it is set..... john

It is a 1997 740i; and original, factory installed

My mistake, 1994 740i There is a little red lite on the wood panel right of the steering column. It is not blinking, ever. I thought maybe the alarm is not set since the battery was disconnected.

a little red light in the wood sounds like an aftermarket alarm..... the stock alarm should have a red light in the center air vent on top of the dash....
if the light comes on when you lock the car, the alarm should be armed...... to test, roll down a window, lock the cars driver door with the key, wait a few minutes, and reach inside and open the door..... the alarm should go off.... to reset, unlock the driver door with the key
